Job Description

The System Administrator's role is to ensure the stable operation of the in-house computer network. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all system hardware, software, and associated peripherals. The person will also analyze and resolve end user hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training where required. Excellent problem-solving and customer-service skills are needed, as well as thorough knowledge of PC hardware, software, and network connections.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and maintain desktop and laptop PCs and peripherals such as printers.
  • Install and configure application and operating system software, patches and upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hardware and network connectivity issues.
  • Remove old equipment and perform data migration to new machines.
  • Analyze and identify trends in issue reporting and devise preventive solutions.
  • Configure, optimize, fine-tune and monitor operating system software and servers.
  • Manage servers, including e-mail, print and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software.
  • Manage security solutions, including anti-virus, and data loss prevention systems.
  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
  • Perform system backups and recovery.
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
  • Work with hardware and software vendors to verify timely product delivery and ensuring that new equipment is installed and ready to operate on schedule.
  • Conduct research on network products, services, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts.
  • Evaluate and manage technical support systems hardware and software and make recommendations regarding upgrades or changes.
  • On-call availability for after-hours troubleshooting as required.

Required Experience & Background

  • Bachelor's Degree in a computer-related field and/or 3-5 years of equivalent work experience.
  • Microsoft Certified Professional designation preferred.
  • Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems.
  • Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards.
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Good understanding of the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
