Job Description


The Network Engineer will design, build, monitor, and troubleshoot network communication systems such as LAN, WAN, VPN, Wireless LAN, and Internet Cloud solutions; Perform network modeling, analysis, and planning; Research and recommend both network and security related hardware and software; Build and maintain Unix and Linux systems to provide critical network services; Provide additional support to systems including but not limited to firewalls, IPS/IDS, load balancers, storage area networks, and backup solutions.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and support complex network environments with technologies including MPLS, Frame Relay, VPN, Point-to-Point and Ethernet.
  • Configure and install various network and security related devices (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers)
  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations.
  • Build and maintain both Unix and Linux systems to provide critical infrastructure services such as FTP/SFTP, NFS, DNS, SMTP, and Proxy Services.
  • Support Storage Area Network infrastructure at both the network and system level.
  • Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure.
  • Maintain and support all enterprise monitoring technologies (e.g. Nagios, Cacti, Syslog-NG, Solarwinds Orion NPM, and ELK) and establish associated policies governing both advanced notifications and escalation procedures.
  • Collaborate regularly with other engineers, administrators, programmers, technicians, and appropriate levels of management in the design, testing, and evaluation of networking systems.
  • Create and maintain clear and accurate network, system and process documentation.
  • Stay current on emerging security threats related to both networking and security systems.
    Technical and Functional
  • Ability to design, build, and troubleshoot networks in both data center and office environments.
  • Experience working with networking hardware including routers, switches, and wireless devices.
  • Experience working with security hardware and tools such as firewalls, IPS/IDS systems, packet sniffers, and port scanners.
  • Strong working knowledge of Layer 3 Networking protocols including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, ICMP, and IPSec.
  • Strong working knowledge of Layer 2 Networking protocols including Ethernet, STP, RSTP, PPP, Frame Relay, CDP, LACP, VTP, and VLANs.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as Bind, Squid, Apache, MySQL, and HAProxy in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Ability to utilize a scripting language (e.g. Bash, Perl, Python) to automate regular tasks and processes.
  • In-depth understanding of application protocols (e.g. DNS, SSH, HTTPS, SFTP, SMTP) and their behaviors across network environments.
  • Experience with VoIP, QoS, and IP telephony technologies.
  • Knowledge of virtualization technology (e.g. VMWare) and virtual networking components strongly desired.
