Job Description

The GIS technician will be responsible for organizing and completing field work specifically, all research plots demonstrations, data gathering, and conveying the status of studies to those it concerns. Position will require technicians to live in the Orlando area.

To achieve these goals the technician will perform the following:

  • Surface vegetation characterization using map survey and GIS technology.
  • Works with geospatial data analysis, conversion, and data manipulation and editing with ESRI products
  • Weekly conversations with mangers on various project statuses.
  • Troubleshoots operating problems with GIS systems and maintains services in ArcIMS
  • Collection of data using electromagnetic geophysical sensor.
  • Perform geo-referenced soil sampling.
  • Monitor and implement vegetation and turf resurfacing studies using precise data collection methodology.
  • Summarize and present results from scientific studies using charts, graphs and text.
  • Interacting with diverse parties including but not limited to: local utilities and municipal leaders.
  • Adhere to lab safety protocols with a solid understanding of safety techniques and procedures.

This is a one-year term appointment with possible extension dependent on performance and continued funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree or 2 years of college coursework in Landscape management with 1-2 years of relevant experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An understanding of ArcGIS and map making procedures.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Exel as a tool for data management and manipulation.
  • Must be personable, flexible; possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Be willing to travel between Brooklyn, Ithaca and Riverhead when need be.
  • Willingness to live in Brooklyn/New York City
  • Must possess Leadership and Management skills
  • Must be able to lift 30-50 lbs
  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgement when acting on behalf of the University.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and motivation for assisting in the experimental work conducted.
  • Good writing skills for preparing preliminary documentation of the experiments conducted.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver's license.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to Ithaca, NY as well as Riverhead, NY.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or formal training of 2-4 years is preferred
  • Previous experience in data acquisition and knowledge of remote sensing data and GIS analysis.
