POSITION SUMMARY

A fully qualified level under the general supervision of the Chief Designer. Coordinates and supervises design assignments and related work performed by contractors, junior designers and technical support staff, or plans and completes highly technical designs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develops, approves, and coordinates project schedules to ensure that objectives of cost, quality and time are met.
  • Develops and recommends improvements in design standards to lower costs, improve work quality and facilitate maintenance.
  • Investigates, advises and solves unusual design and field engineering problems by devising new approaches or applying existing criteria in novel ways.
  • Develops guidelines and initiates investigations by junior designers.
  • Requires effective working relationships with colleagues, officials and associates for the purpose of discussing design problems, explaining design features and specifications.
  • Keeps informed of new design processes.

DIRECTION RECEIVED

  • Work is assigned in terms of project objectives and definitions and budget limitations. Advice is available on critical areas that impact the work of others. Completed work is generally accepted as accurate and plans and recommendations are reviewed only for feasibility, soundness of judgment and conformance with assigned objectives.

DIRECTION OF OTHERS

As a Group Leader

  • Is responsible for continuing supervision. Assigns project assignments and gives instructions, advice and guidance to junior designers and technical staff and reviews work in progress. May supervise a project team of up to 10 individuals.

As a Specialist

  • Ensures that the effective design methods and engineering techniques are used and that the accuracy and quality of highly technical design work meets or exceeds standards. May be responsible for a small group of support staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A university or technical college graduate with at least 15 years of extensive advanced discipline specific knowledge and training experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of studies and extensive related experience.
  • Competence in computer applications for engineering is required.
